What is a PPA?

Power Purchase Agreement

PPA stands for Power Purchase Agreement. Instead of buying a 25-year system and being responsible for paying it off when you sell the home, you just purchase the power it produces at our rate instead of the utility's.

Put another way — we put Solar on your roof and sell that back to you at a rate that is at already ~10% less than your utility company, while also capping the yearly rate increases at 2.9% rather than the 8-10% yearly hikes from the utilities.

A 25-year product shouldn't be the responsibility of one person. Pay for your power while you are in the home, without worrying about having to pay everything off when you move.

Do you have PGE or Pacific Power?

In order to go Solar without being tied to very expensive batteries, your utility company needs to offer Net Metering or an equivalent. PUDs do not. PGE and Pacific Power do.

Does your home get enough sun?

Only 1 in 4 homes gets the exposure necessary for Solar. You need a part of your roof that gets sun for most of the year. South is best, but East and West are fine without shade. Never north.

Is your bill big enough?

We can offer a lower rate for that power for 25 years. Bigger bills mean bigger savings, but so does time in the home. The quicker the utility bill goes up — and that's QUICK — the more you save.

How old is your roof?

Solar is a 25-year product. If you have at least 10 years left, it's a no-brainer. If it needs replacing anyway, perfect timing — we can do the reroof too. If it only has a few years left, this program might not be the best fit right now.

Will your home need upgrades?

Maybe. But if it does, this program likely covers them. Before we finalize anything, we do a Site Survey to check your Meter, Roof/Structural, and Electrical. If upgrades are needed, we can likely cover them on our end.

Do you have enough space?

Depending on your bill size or roof size, you may not offset your entire utility bill. Think of Solar as your primary source of power. Regardless of the offset, your price for that power will be lower, and stay lower.

Who is involved?

Your Utility doesn't change — they just store your power

If you have PGE or Pacific Power, this is called Net Metering — their program for Solar storage so you don't have to buy batteries. Only 3 states offer free storage.

You send them your extra power in the summer, and they store it for a 1:1 credit. Then they give it back to you in the winter. The source of your power changes. Your infrastructure doesn't.

Your utility actually wants you to do this. They make more money selling your power at peak season than they lose by your monthly bill going away.

Solar energy finance and contract agreement

Lightreach offers the rate

Palmetto Lightreach is the company offering you the Solar rate for the system, which they have to keep producing for 25 years. Because it is in their name rather than yours, if anything happens to the system — a tree branch, critters, hardware replacement etc. — the company is the one who has to pay to fix it, not you. They have to keep the power pumping for 25yrs, and must compensate you for loss of power if a panel ever goes down.

While they'll guarantee a certain amount of power per year from the system, anything extra that it produces above that is free power for you. The panels tend to be overbuilt by about 5–10% to provide a buffer, so you will likely have extra, which you keep.

Context

Why haven't I heard about this before?

Chances are, the only approach you've heard to Solar is ownership

That means a bunch of money up front, or a big loan you are required to pay off when you sell. Since Covid and now the current economy, many people are uncertain as to how long they'll stay in the home. For that reason, they don't want to commit to a 25-year system, or wait over a decade to make their money back.

It's cheaper now because your utility rates are skyrocketing

If you have PGE or Pacific Power, your electricity rates have gone up by 10%/yr since 2021. Before then, the rate hikes were a modest 2–3%/yr, which paired with inflation and never made the news. Now, with oil prices and AI data centers looming, it only threatens to get worse.

The commercial workaround - selling you the power

The 30% federal tax credit for Solar was abruptly cut this year. That means the price to purchase your own system is now 30% higher than it was last year. However, for a commercially owned system (the PPA), the tax credit is still available through 2027. The reason we can beat your rate is because we are subsidized by the same 30% rebate you can no longer get yourself.
